Chair, Information and Computer Sciences

Welcome to the Information and Computer Sciences (ICS) Department at the University of Hawaii at Mānoa. I am pleased to serve as Department Chair alongside such a diverse, dedicated, and productive faculty.

Our department offers B.A. and B.S. degrees in Computer Science at the undergraduate level. In addition to the general undergraduate degrees, we also offer two special interest tracks, one in Data Science and the other in Security Science. In collaboration with the Hawaii Data Science Institute, we offer a new Certificate in Data Science. In collaboration with the Academy for Creative Media, we offer a new Certificate in Creative Computational Media. At the graduate level, we offer an M.S. degree and have just started a Bachelors-to-Masters (BAM) program allowing students who complete certain undergraduate courses to obtain the M.S. within one year after graduation.  We offer the Ph.D. degree as the only R1 Doctoral-granting Computer Science program in the state of Hawaii.

According to, which ranks approximately 116 U.S. universities based primarily on publication, our strengths are in the areas of Logic & Verification, High-Performance Computing, Human-Computer Interaction, Visualization, and Computer Architecture. We boast the highest resolution immersive cave environment in the world as part of the Laboratory for Advanced Visualization and Applications (LAVA).

The ICS Department welcomes back our students to in-person instruction after two years of remote learning. We sincerely hope that the worst of the COVID pandemic is behind us and that we can begin to rebuild our community.
