Virtual characters with realistic moods, reactions, and evolving emotional awareness open the door to truly dramatic game content and enriched virtual experiences. Currently, video game players’ avatars function as devices for positioning the user within the virtual space and pointing out objects. Instantaneous, real-time calculation of a user’s navigational input creates the feeling of reality that powers the popularity of current games. We are developing an engine to extend the real-time reactivity to the realm of emotions. By calculating virtual characters’ spontaneous emotional responses to users, we can extend the rich navigational interactivity of contemporary games to communicational interactivity.
